This absolutely broke my heart.   If you'll all excuse me, I'm going to go have a little cry and cuddle my dogs now.

Fuck. Fuck.

She made it out of Afghanistan and she dies because of fricking paperwork.

Just. Damn.

Augh. I know.

Do yourself a favor and doooon't click on the comments. A LOT of people in there are blaming the soldier for the dog not being microchipped or tagged. Granted, both my pups are chipped, but they don't wear their collars if they're at home. This really could have happened to anyone's pet. :( (And let's not gloss over the part where the fucking procedures weren't followed properly kthxbai.)

Plus maybe she took her collar off. Our cats do that ALL THE TIME. And aren't microchips expensive? Maybe they just hadn't gotten it done yet.

Jesus. Cut the family some slack, people.

Absolutely -- collars that have the clicky fastenings instead of proper buckles can be broken out of. Which is why they're called "break-away collars"! And Darwin has absolutely broken out of more than his fair share of breakaways. Even a regular flat collar with a buckle can and will slip over a dog's head -- and I know I prefer to err on the side of too loose over too tight when fitting collars on Darwin and Syd.

(And I keep thinking THIS CANNOT BE THE ONLY DOG THEY FUCKED UP ON. And how many lost pets got put down because someone fucked the paperwork?)

My vet microchipped my dog for free, but it would cost a couple hundred to register her.

I can't remember how much it cost to chip Darwin -- it was done when he was neutered at 8 mos old (he's almost 5 years). Sydney was chipped at the shelter before we adopted her for an extra $25, I think?

And the really horrible thing? This cannot possibly be the FIRST time this has happened. How many other lost pets were put down because someone fucked up on the job?

Oh, I KNOW! I read that story at work and had to take a short break because I got so choked up. Oh, that poor soldier! That poor dog! I just--I can't even.

It's so not fair. It's massively, monumentally unfair to a level that can't even be accurately quantified. And now I want to go give my dog a hug. I can't even imagine!

Oh, I cried. I bawled. I cried, and then started crying EVEN HARDER when I tried to tell my husband why I was crying.

It was just--they showed a picture, and it would've been bad anyway, but they showed a PICTURE, and then I was imagining THAT DOG being led back, and he looked so happy in the picture and he was such a wonderful dog who'd saved the lives of soldiers and got a family out of it and home and a happy ending and--

Damn, now I'm crying. At least it's not at work. It's not FAIR.

I KNOW. It makes my heart hurt just thinking about it.

....

And I'm going to start crying again. Dammit.

I actually have anxiety attacks over animal cruelty; it's all just so overwhelming because I can't do a thing to save them all. Save a few? Maybe. But it's not enough. Not nearly. That fact has given me more than one sleepless night.

I wish shelters didn't have to put down so many animals. The volume is so high, things like this are bound to happen and that's just not acceptable. The dog was willing to give her life to save her make-shift family, and we bring her home only to poison her.'

I think I'm going to be sick.

I know exactly what you mean. I get worked up about animals in general, but I think dogs hit me hardest (cats come a close second).

I remember reading once that your basic dog has the intelligence level of a toddler. I joke that our two dogs are like children with fur, but all kidding aside, I know our dogs depend on us to take care of them and protect them, and when things like this happen, my heart breaks for the family, definitely, but even more so for the dog who likely had no idea what was happening to her. She survived Afghanistan as a stray, and was brought home to finally get a family, and after all that, wound up with some nitwit who didn't follow the proper protocol.

(And I know not all shelter workers and volunteers are nitwits. But this person very clearly was.)

......I'm glad I read this BEFORE going to work, so I can go snuggle my puppies. Because I am not quite crying, but there are tears. It's even worse because she survived so much and was killed by an idiot who didn't pay attention to his paperwork... but hero dog or just family pet, finding out your animal was... god I would have killed that tech. Honestly. They would have had to call security on me, if I found out someone killed my dog over a clerical error. A clerical error. Not a mistake during a medical procedure or even an accident like my baby getting hit by a car. Fucking paperwork, not paying attention AT YOUR JOB fuck...
