have you tried the fresh-ground peanut butter from publix? one of my friends used to swear by it, but i was generally too cheap back in the day. i like the smuckers natural myself.
as for your grandfather...i remember when my various grandparents have been in the hospital, they've all undergone that same kind of swing from patient to nasty and stubborn. older people tend to have very set routines and disrupting that throws them off SO BAD. this is about ten times worse if they're the stubborn, independent types. being in the hospital is an experience in utter powerlessness, since other people decide when you sleep, when you eat, when you bathe, what you're wearing, how quickly you can get up to go to the bathroom, etc etc on top of all the requisite poking and prodding and monitoring. i feel terrible for the poor nurses, though.
