BPAL!
I had my first experience with BPAL, thanks to hearing about it from
everstar3 and about a zillion other people on my friends-list. I'd lurked on the site for months, browsing scents, but never actually committing to anything. So, finally, I got to a point where I didn't feel guilty about splurging on something so completely unnecessary, and got six imps:
Tempest
O
Jezebel
Anne Bonny
Mata Hari
Hetairae
...and they threw in Languor for kicks. I've tried everything but Languor, and I have to say, I'm very, very pleased with my choices.
Tempest: "A crisp ozone-tinged breeze. The scent of the first gentle rain before the storm." -- When I first put this one on, it smelled very clean, rather like soap. As it warmed to my skin, I could smell hints of "rain," which really shocked me. It's very subtle on me, and doesn't smell like I'm wearing anything at all, which I like.
O: "The scent of sexual obsession, slavery to sensual pleasure, and the undercurrent of innocence defiled utterly. Amber and honey with a touch of vanilla." I had been warned that this was not the sort of oil you wear "in polite company" (because it smells like teh S3X) so, of course, I wore it out to dinner with friends. Let me say now that I love this scent. As I told Evvie, it doesn't smell like sex on me, but it does smell the way foreplay should. I can't even describe it, but suffice to say I caught myself discreetly sniffing my wrist throughout the night. ;)
Jezebel: "Biblical witch, priestess of Astarte, and general troublemaker. A true role model for today's upwardly mobile Modern Woman. A gloriously decadent blend of honey, roses, orange blossom and sandalwood." I was pretty hesitant about this one. Not because of the description -- oh, no. No, the description hooked me with the sandalwood. But when I opened the vial, it smelled like bubblegum. I thought for a while that they'd sent me "Lolita" instead. I smelled no sandalwood, no honey, and I really wasn't fond of the scent. But, I tried it anyway (on a day when I wasn't going anywhere, which, lately, is par for the course). Oh my god, I loved it. After it had warmed to my skin, I could smell the honey and, to a lesser extent, the sandalwood. Good stuff.
Anne Bonny: "Named in honor of the most notorious female pirate to ever set sail. Wicked, cruel, beautiful, intelligent, resourceful and dangerous: a true role model. A blend of Indonesian red patchouli, red sandalwood, and frankincense." Again, I was hooked by the sandalwood with this one. (And, dude -- PIRATE. Please. That alone was almost incentive enough!) And, again, as with Jezebel, I didn't like it when I sniffed the vial. It was too... sharp. I can't explain it really. But, again, I tried it. I happen to be wearing this one right now, and so far, I'm hugely pleased. The sandalwood seems to be stronger in this one, which I like. (I ran a search for sandalwood to narrow down the zillions of choices available to me.) I really, really like this one.
Mata Hari: "A renowned exotic dancer and courtesan, possessed of aristocratic elegance, matchless charm, an iron will and a streak of fearlessness. The actual events of her life have met with much speculation, and to this day it is unclear whether or not she was truly a German spy. Despite shaky evidence of her guilt, she was tried for espionage by a closed court-martial and was executed by a French firing squad in 1917. Her scent is striking and bold with a delicate yet dark undertone: five roses with soft jasmine, warmed by vanilla, fig, tonka bean and mahogany, spiced with a drop of coffee bean." I loved the scent of this one in the vial -- the coffee bean comes out really strong. (Can rarely drink the stuff anymore, but I'll always love the smell.) I also love the scent of mahogany, so this too seemed to be a natural choice for me. On me, however, it loses some of its initial charm. It still smells good, but it just... I don't know. It's nice on me, but kind of unmemorable. The jasmine comes out particularly strong, and as I'm not a huge fan of floral scents, that makes this one kind of "meh" for me.
Hetairae: "The sublimely beautiful, fiercely independent, impeccably cultured, fascinatingly worldly and witty courtesans of ancient Greece. A seductive and dazzling blend of golden honey, fiery patchouli, sweet fig and clove, and a blushing touch of ylang ylang." Patchouli and ylang ylang sold this one for me, even though I wasn't too hip on the honey at first. This one is probably my favorite so far (though, damn, O does rock my socks). It smelled wonderful in the vial, and it warmed to my skin just right -- the honey and patchouli are just... wow. I love this one. AND, this one got approval by George, who very seldom notices what kind of perfume I'm wearing.
I do plan on ordering six more imps eventually. I eventually want to try La Petit Mort, Lightning, Lust, Sin, Cordelia, Whitechapel, R'lyeh, Kathmandu, Eden, Jabberwocky, White Rabbit... Yeah, I need to stop now. ;)
