The problem with LJ: We all think we are so close, but really we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.
Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.
Proper post later. Not much going on lately, but ... *is distracted by teh s00per kyoot Bronte antics*
...
Anyway. Right. Not much going on lately, but somehow I feel uber-busy. I don't understand why that is. Going to try and get some more stuff done.
Oh!
squeakyinuears! We got your card! Thank you very much. ^__^

Favorite season: Autumn, hands down. Now, I have to clarify here -- I live in Florida, and we really don't have autumn, but I grew up in New England and lived 2 years in Alexandria, Virginia, and the two years in Virginia gave me some of the most beautiful autumns I can remember. I love autumn mostly because the humidity leaves the air, and you get these gorgeous brisk winds that smell of wood-smoke, and it's not so cold that you have to put on layer after layer of clothes -- it's just cold enough to be comfortable. I also love to watch the colors develop on the trees. It's a season that leaves me feeling calm, content, and at peace.
Favorite time of day: Hmm, that's a toughie. I'm not a morning person, really, but there is something about the early-morning hours that's always appealed to me. The smell of dew in the air, the hush that settles around everything -- it's a moment of sanity before the world wakes up and goes nuts. Again, it's a peaceful time, and if I'm awake, I usually try to enjoy that peace.

given that, if you could only chose three things to "save" from your home (other than people/pets) what would they be and why?

Okay.
*cracks knuckles*
#1: My 1865 edition of "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." It was a gift from my mother when I graduated with my Bachelor's degree.
#2: My grandmother's jewelry box. It's blue soapstone and has the three Graces on the lid. I have no idea where she bought it (I think possibly Italy, since I'm pretty sure she never went to Greece, but I could be wrong there), but it is one of my most treasured possessions, because it was hers.
#3: This is the hard one. I think I'm going to have to say my laptop, because I have things on here I can never replace, my MA thesis not the least among them.
Honorable Mentions: The Jim Brandenburg "Raven" print my mother got me several Christmases ago, and the very out-of-print 1925 edition of The Devil in Love by Jacques Cazotte. The book is numbered (#219 out of 365 copies, of which 350 were sold in the US), which my mother also found for me after I mentioned wanting to get my hands on a copy, because that novel inspired one of my favorites: The Monk, and I wanted to compare the two. It was something I really wanted, but only mentioned once, and I'm astounded she found it. The Brandenburg print is also precious to me because it was another instance of my showing my mom something in a very "throw away" manner (because I was scouring his site for images to use as desktop wallpapers). Without asking me, she managed to pick one of my favorite images from the entire site -- a lone raven on a birch limb, during a light snowfall.

*Niamh attempts to boil 63 pages of thesis down into a few sentences*
Basically, during the 19th century, particularly in France, there was a whole... movement, I guess you'd say, of ennui. It was the fashion to be bored with everything. And, because people were so bored, they'd go out of their way to find amusement, so it becomes a whole... cycle of stimulation (and desensitization).
Now, gothic fiction's basic goal was to inspire terror, so during this phase of fashionable ennui, it likewise became fashionable (in France, mostly) to read these books as one way to avoid boredom.
In Melmoth the Wanderer (which, by the way, enjoyed great success in France in the 19th century, and even spawned a novella-length sequel written by a French writer whose name I cannot recall at the moment), Maturin creates these terrifying scenarios where ennui becomes the object of terror. People are locked away, or otherwise separated from society, and left with nothing to stimulate the senses.
So, I took the phase of 19th century ennui, the French obsession with Melmoth the Wanderer, and that novel's use of ennui as something to fear, and ran with it. :D

Actually, I had to pass a translation exam to get my MA. *rolls eyes* I did really poorly, until I broke down and got a tutor who worked with me to prepare -- and after, I think, the third try, I passed with flying colors. French, I think, is one of those things I could be good at if I practiced with it, and sometimes I wonder why I don't. (My tutor actually invited me to be a part of an advanced private class she taught, but I never took advantage of it.)

I wear a few different perfumes (not at the same time, of course). Hanae Mori is my present favorite, and Demeter's "Earl Gray" scent. I also LOVE BPAL's "O" and "Hetairae" like crazy. (I also love Ralph Lauren Blue for men, but I don't wear it, obviously; Tora-kun does.)
My favorite non-perfume scents are: lavender, wood-smoke, baking bread, roasting turkey, and whatever the hell that combination is that makes a bakery smell so good.

It's actually a rather long, silly story. I was nineteen, and I remember that it was the summer my grandmother had passed away. I stayed behind in NH after the funeral, and Mom went home. A few days before my flight home, she phoned me and told me that she'd acquired me a part time job at her company, working in the documentation center.
I was like, "Uh... yay?"
So, anyway, I'd work there, making manuals for people, copying presentation handouts, stuff like that, and there was this guy who'd come by every day -- he was from the shipping/receiving warehouse, and he'd cut through the Doc. Center on his way to the main building. And he'd always stop and talk to me, flirting.
Except I thought he was a big dork, so I'd always try to look extra busy when he came by, because conversation was just too awkward, and he was too annoying, and I just felt embarrassed for him.
And then, one fine day, he brought along his brother, George. ;) (Who, at the time, was wearing these completely ridiculous wire-rimmed sunglasses with purple lenses, and I remember thinking he'd be so cute if not for the glasses.) So, we got introduced, and as it turned out, he came to make deliveries more often after that meeting.
Anyway, right before 4th of July weekend, I had to do some data entry at the shipping/receiving warehouse. And while I was there, both George and his brother did a whole... tag-team flirting thing, which they thought I didn't notice, apparently. (I was laughing my fool head off when they weren't around.) Finally, right before he left for the day, his BROTHER asked me my number. I was disappointed, yeah, but I'm a crappy liar, so I gave him my number, determined to be away from home all weekend if need be.
He never called. :) It also happened that his temp contract ran out right before the holiday weekend, so I knew I'd never be seeing him again. I figured George's contract ran out as well, and I was a little bummed about that, but HE didn't think to ask for my number, so good riddance to him.
Except that about a week later, I ran into him at work.
Me: "What the hell are you doing here?"
Him: *long pause* "Uh... I... work here?"
So, we started talking a little, and he asked me if I wanted to do something that weekend. I did, and gave him my number.
And......... he never called.
Turns out he'd lost my number and was too much of a wuss to ask for it again.
So, Monday came, and I was indignant. And he was grovelly. He explained what had happened, and asked to make it up to me. (Little did I know that he went to my MOTHER'S OFFICE to ask HER ADVICE on how to handle his little faux pas.) Our first date was August 5, 1994.

Do George and his brother know the complete story of it now? ^^

Wow, I thought Ben and I had been together a long time (1997). My mom and dad were together since they were 15. o.O
