Yoinked from [livejournal.com profile] patchcat :

Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on lima beans, favorite type of underwear, graphic techniques, etc.

In other, more annoying news, the uni is telling me I have an unpaid balance on my account. I'd... really like to know how that's possible, since I couldn't have gotten my fin aid refund until the bill was paid.  WTF?

Oh, and I think the neighborhood stray cat peed on our front patio.  Charming.

wordinista: (No such thing as too many books)

1. Pick 10 of your favorite books or series.
2. Post the first sentence of each book. (If one sentence seems too short, post two or three!)
3. Let everyone try to guess the titles and authors of your books.

LET'S DO THIS THING:

1.  I have just returned from a visit to my landlord -- the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with.  Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte) -- [livejournal.com profile] everstar3

2.  It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.  (note: I COULDN'T NOT INCLUDE THIS ONE.)  Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) -- [livejournal.com profile] darkfrog24

3.  It was a nice day. Good Omens (Pratchett & Gaiman) -- [profile] jazzy_fay

4.  I have to.  I've been fighting it all night.  I'm going to lose.

5.  3 May, Bistritz -- Left Munich at 8.35 p.m. on 1st May, arriving at Vienna ealy next morning; should have arrived at 6.46, but train was an hour late. Dracula (Bram Stoker) -- [livejournal.com profile] mscongeniality

6.  It begins, as most things begin, with a song.  Anansi Boys (Neil Gaiman) -- [livejournal.com profile] rhymed

7.  It was a dumb thing to do but it wasn't that dumb.  Sunshine (Robin McKinley) -- [livejournal.com profile] sarolynne

8.  Matilda Goodnight stepped back from her latest mural and reaized that of all the crimes she'd committed in her thirty-four year years, painting the floor-to-ceiling reproduction of van Gogh's sunflowers on Clarissa Donnelly's dining room wall was the one that was going to send her to hell.  Faking It (Jennifer Crusie) -- [livejournal.com profile] janetl

9.  Harriet Vane sat at her writing table and stared out into Mecklenburg Square.  Gaudy Night (Dorothy L. Sayers) -- [livejournal.com profile] mscongeniality

10.  At first, all I saw was a white blur out of the corner of my eye. It was a long way away, maybe five hundred yards, and initially I wasn't sure what it was.

Some of these I know are insanely easy.  OH WELL.
wordinista: (Loev)

If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist, and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the Internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

Awesome friendslist is awesome.

Rules: Copy the questions to your own post, just erase the answers and enter your own. Use the first letter of your name to answer each of the following questions. They have to be real; nothing made up! If the person before you had the same first initial, you must use different answers. (Sucks to be yoooou~) You also cannot use any word twice and you can't use your name for the boy/girl name question.

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other.

So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Or something completely random. Ask away.

Dogs have been walked, agility lesson has been attended, dogs have been fed.  (And I'm starting to wonder if walking Darwin before agility is a bad idea, since today he was kind of ridiculously low-energy on the course, and my teacher actually commented on how slow he was.  Not good.)

I need a shower and some tea, in that order.  I'm feeling yucky and crampy, and need to go to Home Depot, but really, really don't feel like it, so we'll see how that goes.  Today feels like it'll be a good day to settle in with a pot of tea and write.  I seem to be managing about 700 words a day, or have managed it for the past few days, whch makes me happy.

In other news, am currently growing more and more addicted to Twitter:  WHO ELSE IS ON TWITTER?
wordinista: (Possess those shores with me!)

It's been a little while, most of it filled with holiday prep that was gloriously plague-free. Last week I took the dogs in to be groomed, and then went to get my hair cut as well -- I'd had it in an asymmetrical bob (shorter on the left than the right, and shorter in the back than the front), and it was a fun cut, but I'd kind of had my fill of it, so I asked my hairdresser (who, we figured out, has been cutting my hair for upwards of fourteen years) to even out the left and right sides, because, really, the left side didn't seem all that short.

Ahahahah I HAVE NO HAIR LEFT GUYS.

I wore my hair pretty short back when I was in grad school, and this is... hmm. A little shorter than that. I CAN LIVE WITH IT, because my hair grows pretty quickly, but it's a bit of a shock, still. I think it's kind of cute, sort of.

Tuesday, Mom and I went for manicure/pedicures to spoil ourselves before the inevitable cooking/baking/insanityfest. It was a really great time, and the only sucky part of it was that after the appointment we had THINGS TO DO, except all we really wanted to do was go home and crack open a bottle of wine. Which we did not do, to our credit. Tuesday also saw brother in-law and nephew come by for a little visit, which was nice, though I was totally outnumbered by stinky boys. ;)

Wednesday there was cleaning and tidying and taking George to get his hair cut and lots of errands and turkey prep.

Thursday was fan-damn-tastic, and I discovered that homemade pumpkin cheesecake is the Best Thing Ever. The turkey was a little dry, but I think that has to do with the fact that it was SO big (just shy of 30 lbs, yo). I tried to get a really big one because Mom and I split the leftovers, but I really need to stick to birds within the 26 lb range, I think. So I'm not too upset about it -- it was just a little dry, so not a complete disaster.

The long weekend was REALLY nice and I played way more Fable 2 than I should have, but then Saturday hit me with a migraine, and it stuck with me for most of Sunday, and today my head feels weirdly... achy and sore.

We also got a FAKE TREE this year, and put it up Friday. It... it's really nice. I mean. Really nice. I've been burning a Yankee Candle Co. candle, and every now and then get a whiff of it, and am fooled for a second. It was also pre-lit, which rocks, because I hate stringing the tree with lights. (Anyone else who has faux Christmas trees -- what do you do to get that tree-smell? Inquiring minds want to know!)

And also: A MEME

If you had me under your command and could make me write anything, what would you love to see me write? I'm not actually going to write any of these (unless something strikes me - then i will, eventually), but I am curious.

Leave me a comment and I will reply with why I like you. If I don't know you, I'll either make something up or tell you why I like your LiveJournal. You must pay for the privilege by posting a message like this one on your LiveJournal.

HOWEVER, I am stealing an additional idea from [livejournal.com profile] piecrumbs (who, by the way, is awesome for suggesting this) who added the following addendum:

but wait there's more!!
IT WOULD BE REALLY NICE AND I WOULD REALLY LIKE IT
if the people who reply to this post
would take the time to reply to one other person in this post and tell them why you love them
it doesn't have to be long or detailed
and you don't have to reply to everyone!
just…one other person o/
and if someone has a lot of lot, YOU MAY LOVE THEM ALSO but try to reply to someone with a bit less love, yeah?
that way there's a lot of love in this post :<b

Now, in other news, I would really like it if I could find my recipe notebook now.  I'd started moving recipes from my little, battered notebook, that I have had since about 2000 (and managed NOT to lose through FOUR moves) into the recipe journal George got me last Christmas.  Somewhere along the line, I put it somewhere, and... cannot find it.  Anywhere.  And I'm not done transcribing recipes.

MY CHILI RECIPE IS IN THERE DAGNABBIT.  My chili recipe that I have been adjusting and tweaking and making JUST SO for years.  And now I.  I cannot find it.  Argh.

Ganked from various people on my f-list!

List 10 books you have on your bookshelf that you think nobody else on your friends list has on theirs.

*cracks knuckles*

1. The Complete Political & Dramatic Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Edited by James Dykes Campbell. 1901. (Out of print.) This one has a great deal of sentimental value for me, because it's the first "rare" book I ever bought. I also love STC like a mad thing.

2. Horror Ficton in the Protestant Tradition, Victor Sage. 1988. (Out of print, as far as I can tell. I got this one for Christmas during grad school after handing my mother a wish-list of hard-to-find/out of print books.)

3. Baudelaire's Literary Criticism, by Rosemary Lloyd. (Also out of print, I think. I bought this one while I was researching my Master's thesis.)

4. The Age of Reason Begins, by Will and Ariel Durant. (Ditto out of printo. Also bought (or maybe given for Christmas?) while researching my thesis.)

5. Valperga, by Mary Shelley. (Going out on a limb with this one -- not one of her more famous novels.)

6. The 'Cane Mutiny: How the Miami Hurricanes Overturned the Football Establishment, by Bruce Feldman. Yes, I really read a whole book on the history of one football team. DON'T JUDGE ME.

7. The Devil in Love, by Jacques Cazotte. Numbered edition (219 of 365), copyright 1925. Out of print. (This book is a translation of the French novella that inspired Mathew Lewis' The Monk. My mother found it I DO NOT KNOW WHERE OR HOW OMG and gave it to me for Christmas several years back.)

8. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Illustrated edition. Copyright 1886. Waaay out of print. (Huge sentimental value here -- Mom gave me this as a gradution present when I got my earned my BA.)

9. H: The Story of Heathcliff's Journey Back to Wuthering Heights, by Lin Haire-Sargeant. (I'm kind of embarrassed to admit I have this one. I'm doubly embarrassed to admit liking it. I'm also pretty sure it's out of print.)

10. The Waverley Novels: Surgeon's Daughter and Castle Dangerous, by Sir Walter Scott. Copyright, 1879. (A professor in my first year of grad school gave us a syllabus that had NOTHING BUT OUT OF PRINT BOOKS ON IT. I found this one on Ebay. Fail, prof. Fail.)

EDIT: HOLY CRAP. Just looked up what some of those books are going for on Alibris. HOLY CRAP.

According to The Big Read, the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books on their list. (Six?  SIX?  THAT IS SHAMEFUL.)

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them.

Wow, not the color I was expecting.  And thank god the description is less boring than the color itself.

What color is your soul painted?

Grey

Your soul is painted the color grey, which embodies the characteristics of elegance, humility, respect, reverence, stability, subtlety, wisdom, strong emotions, balance, and cancellation. Grey falls under the element of Water, and symbolizes the moon, tide, ebb and flow.
