1. Pick 10 of your favorite books or series.
2. Post the first sentence of each book. (If one sentence seems too short, post two or three!)
3. Let everyone try to guess the titles and authors of your books.

LET'S DO THIS THING:

1.  I have just returned from a visit to my landlord -- the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with.  Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte) -- [livejournal.com profile] everstar3

2.  It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.  (note: I COULDN'T NOT INCLUDE THIS ONE.)  Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) -- [livejournal.com profile] darkfrog24

3.  It was a nice day. Good Omens (Pratchett & Gaiman) -- [profile] jazzy_fay

4.  I have to.  I've been fighting it all night.  I'm going to lose.

5.  3 May, Bistritz -- Left Munich at 8.35 p.m. on 1st May, arriving at Vienna ealy next morning; should have arrived at 6.46, but train was an hour late. Dracula (Bram Stoker) -- [livejournal.com profile] mscongeniality

6.  It begins, as most things begin, with a song.  Anansi Boys (Neil Gaiman) -- [livejournal.com profile] rhymed

7.  It was a dumb thing to do but it wasn't that dumb.  Sunshine (Robin McKinley) -- [livejournal.com profile] sarolynne

8.  Matilda Goodnight stepped back from her latest mural and reaized that of all the crimes she'd committed in her thirty-four year years, painting the floor-to-ceiling reproduction of van Gogh's sunflowers on Clarissa Donnelly's dining room wall was the one that was going to send her to hell.  Faking It (Jennifer Crusie) -- [livejournal.com profile] janetl

9.  Harriet Vane sat at her writing table and stared out into Mecklenburg Square.  Gaudy Night (Dorothy L. Sayers) -- [livejournal.com profile] mscongeniality

10.  At first, all I saw was a white blur out of the corner of my eye. It was a long way away, maybe five hundred yards, and initially I wasn't sure what it was.

Some of these I know are insanely easy.  OH WELL.

2. Pride and Prejudice

Damn but you seem to like in media res.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
...I never noticed that before. Yes. I guess I do. Huh.

[identity profile] darkfrog24.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
My mom reads nine's books. I tried Murder Must Advertise but couldn't get into it. I was trapped in marketing at the time. Couldn't get into Nine Taylors either. But she told me the story of that one. I don't think I should count for nine; I only knw because I looked up the character's name.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
The Nine Taylors was hard for me to get into, but I did quite like Murder Must Advertise.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
9. Gaudy Night

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'M SO SHOCKED YOU GOT THAT ONE.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm distracted by Top Chef, I needed to grab the low hanging fruit.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hee hee! I believe you and Ev share the blame in getting me hooked on Sayers. You should be proud! :D

...I think my writing Wimseyfic for four of the five Yuletide challenges I've participated in also says a lot (five fics, if you count my NYR submision). I don't know what, exactly, but... a lot of it. ;)

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I am!

And, I think it says that you need to not volunteer to write Sayers this year.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
But but but.

It just feels all wrong inside if I don't at least offer.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Variety is the spice of Yuletide! And you can always pick up a Wimsey pinch hit or treat.

Half the fun is getting to try on new characters for size, ones you thought you´d never write in your wildest dreams. I just feel like the matching algorithm has been cheating you of that.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Very, very true on all points. I shall consider NOT offering to write Wimseyfic this year. (But I am totally going to REQUEST it!)

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Request away, that´s the beauty of Yuletide!

And holy crap! Now I´m suddenly seized with the notion to ask for a ´Suite Francaise´ story and I have no idea if it´s been nominated...

[identity profile] darkfrog24.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I thought it was Strong Poison. Ah wells.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
At the start of Strong Poison, Harriet is in prison. Actually, I believe she actually doesn´t even move to Mecklenberg Square until after Have His Carcase.

[identity profile] jazzy-fay.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
#3: Good Omens (I love that book!)

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Me toooooo. My copy is so totally beat to hell it's not even funny.

[identity profile] jazzy-fay.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I know! I've actually got two copies (both the Aziraphale and Crowley covers), because I loaned my original out to a couple of friends and went through withdrawl bought myself another one.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I am going to have to break down and buy another one. The spine on my copy is an absolute mess. XD

[identity profile] rhymed.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
6 is Anansi Boys, by Neil Gaiman?

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
YUS! (Trufax: Spider was the app I never apped.)

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, second guess based entirely on what I know of you...

5. Dracula

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yes!

[identity profile] janetl.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
8 is "Faking It" by the peerless Jennifer Crusie.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! (Um, just as a side note: do I know you? Because you seem not at all familiar to me.)

[identity profile] janetl.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Your memory's not at fault. I'm barging in. I was following a link, following a link...

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha! Been there, done that.

At any rate, welcome!

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
7 is Sunshine. By Robin McKinley.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yesssss. But not the book I would have expected you to get. XD

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well. I would have gotten others if I'd got here earlier.

4 and 10 actually both sound familiar, but I can't place them.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you'd read either of them, but #4 is the one I thought you'd be the one to get. I'm tempted to add a little bit more, because the sentences are so short and vague. But #4 is one I have always considered to be right up your alley.

As for #10, I'll give you this hint: it's a non-fiction book.

[identity profile] everstar3.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure #1 is Wuthering Heights.

[identity profile] w0rdinista.livejournal.com 2009-10-22 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuuuuuuuuuuuuup~

[identity profile] senay-chan.livejournal.com 2009-10-23 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE sunshine. Ive read it almost as many times as The Blue Sword
