To put things into even more perspective, this guy thought that we didn't have to cite our references if what we used was public knowledge.

Not "common knowledge," but PUBLIC.

I nearly had a stroke right there. I went into teacher-mode and explained to him that, yes, you ALWAYS CITE YOUR QUOTATIONS.
