Cool, moist dirt dampened the knees of his trousers as he knelt, a plane ticket in his pocket and regrets swirling through his head; perhaps it wasn't unusual he felt this way: greater Watchers than he had stumbled, had committed transgressions the likes of which he tried never to consider -- but now, as he knelt by the grave of his Slayer, his charge, he wondered how things might have been different had he not been so reserved, had he not tried so bloody hard to keep that professional distance between them, and he couldn't help but think of every time he'd failed her -- perhaps loving her had been one his greatest failure, or perhaps never doing anything about it had been.
For the record, I do not 'ship Buffy/Giles, so this was probably horribly clumsy. But the idea, she would not go away. ;)
