Well, making sure that people get regular doctor visits could help with lowering the incidences of preventable disease, but it's definitely bigger than that. It's the easiest thing in the world to avoid getting bitten by a deer tick: Just tuck your pants into your socks every day every time you leave the house. But dear God I am not under the impression that we could ever get everyone to do that or that telling schoolchildren to do it would be a good idea. Lord help the one kid who does.
You know what's ironic? One of the things that affects how efficient a person's metabolism is, how easy it is to gain weight and hard to lose it, is how much the person's mother got to eat while she was pregnant. I don't doubt that at least a few silhouette-conscious mothers inadvertently hardwired their kids for famine conditions.
