Tora and I just watched "Silent Hill," and we both have the same question:

What in the fuck?

Um, anyone want to clear this one up for us?  Because... yeah.  We... yeah.  No.  I mean, aside from a lot of yelling "You stupid bitch!" at the screen, we're both... pretty damned lost as far as the ending goes.  I mean, it was a frustrating movie as far as movies go, but the end?  Holy crap, dude.  I mean, maybe it's one of those endings you only "get" if you've played the game (neither of us have), but...

What in the fuck?

Why did you torture Tora and yourself like that?!?! *comfort* It's not you guys! IT'S THE STUPID MOVIE. Obviously a blind sugar glider with Alzheimer wrote and directed the damn thing.

I got it, but then I've played all the games. Multiple times. The game endings are all pretty much WTF (especially the UFO and Dog endings, those are awesome). Actually, if they really wanted to be true to the games, they ought to have filmed like 4 alternate endings...

Anyway, I'll heartily agree that the people in the movie were far stupider than they needed to be -- The actors were good, but the script made them stupid. One can forgive that in a game, but in a movie it really makes you go, "WTF?". Oh well, yay special effects, good special effects are all it really takes to endear a movie to me, because I am shallow. XD

I just kept getting the feeling that they were leaving out things they should have told us, and kept reiterating things that WE ALREADY GOT.

Like, okay. I get it. 1974. Town go burny. People die. No need to tell us over, and over, and FUCKING OVER AGAIN.

And what the movie seemed to imply was that Alessa was raped by the janitor, and that Sharon was a product of that rape, so, uh, evil-girl left Sharon on the doorstep of the orphanage.

Except... 1974? That... would have made Sharon 31. Unless it didn't happen that way, but the movie totally implied it, and... argh. It had potential to be good, but fell flat. A lot.

I was cracking up during the nurse scene. DYING. I so wanted "Thriller" to start pouring out of some unseen sound system.

Yeah, there are a lot of bits that people who aren't very familiar with the games won't get or will interpret differently. For example, the possibility of the janitor fathering Sharon never occurred to me, because in the game Alessa created Cheryl/Heather by splitting off the remaining "innocent" part of herself by dint of her own power, and I assumed that movie Alessa did the same thing.

Totally agree with the repetitious part, and I was really pissed off at Cybil just randomly going down under the assault of the miners, even though she'd been kicking their malnourished asses just moments before. WTF?

And I thought the exact same thing during the nurse scene. XD

Still, for a video-game-to-movie adaptation? It's brilliance compared to what the Uwe Bolls of the world are putting out. XP They at least got the visuals and the "feel" right; they even have decent camerawork and cinematography. Now they just need to get better writers and we'll have some decent movies.

I think that's what pissed me off the most about the movie. Because I couldn't tell what was a nod to the game, and what was a sharp left turn out of the game. I got that evil-girl-child (she had a name? Heather?) was the manifestation of Alessa's dark side, but I was fuzzy on where Sharon came from. For a while, because of the emphasis on dates, I thought maybe Sharon was Alessa's reincarnation. So that whole thing could've stood to be clearer in the movie, I think.

I too wanted to see Cybil kick the crap out of those malnourished miners. She was going to TOWN with her asp, and then she just LET them take her down? WTF? I mean, if you're gonna go out, go out fighting!

And when Rose was in the Girls Bathroom from HELL, (a) how the fuck did she know to take ANYTHING out of Dead Janitor's mouth, (b) what did she TAKE out of Dead Janitor's Mouth, and (c) WTF was up with the guys with the canary banging on the door? Were they the miners from the church? Ghosts? I keep thinking maybe they weren't, you know, BAD, since they hauled out of there after the crazy evil shitstorm started.

And it would've been nice if they'd made the alternate reality explanation (when it came) a little less vague.

Vague. That's the whole problem I had with the movie.

However, a lot of the efects were awesome (though I think Burninated Alessa looked kind of fake and pathetic, and the barbed-wire tentacle rape had me laughing and cringing at the same time). The nurses made me laugh, but they WERE creepy. Some of the creepier bits felt kind of like a Marilyn Manson video, actually. And I don't know what that says.

*sigh* At least it was through Netflix, so we didn't actually lose anything but two hours of our lives.

My GOD that was such crap. I mean... crap! Crappity crap! Craptastic! Craptacular! Craparific!

Dude, it was bad.

(sigh) And I'd been looking forward to seeing Laurie Holden on screen again.

Marita rocked the casbah. But as nice as it was seeing her on-screen again, the movie was SO BAD OMG.

I went to the theater to see it, so I understand your pain. The only thing I can figure is they died. I was saying, "This is a weird fucking movie" all the way through. I discouranged everyone I knew from watching it. Sorry you didn't get the memo.

The games are approximately ten and three-quarters times more coherent, even around the requisite "WTF?"-y horror moments, and they're 189375 times better-written. For one thing, it was a scary blood-cult to some dark angel, Samael, not "Our generic God hates unclean ppls!" For another, in the good ending, Cybil did not have to die very fakely at those schmucks' generic hands. -_- And the movie ending, I actually liked as being in the middlin'-bad game endings' spirit; they're just stuck in Silent Hill, even when they're not actually there. Or something. It made sense at the time.

Video games make bad movies because video game logic does not translate to reality very well.

I do not concur. The core stories of many video games would make excellent movies with a little taste and artful writing. FFVII was amazing. All they'd need would be a little character trimming and clear up just whether it was Sephiroth or Jenova causing all that trouble.

True. But remember video games run 10, 20, something 100 hours. Movies run at most 3. There is too much information that needs to be known for a movie to make since that just can't be crammed into 3 hours. This means the movies end up cutting thing and becoming confusing.

But it's not the video game logic. It's the sucky trimwork.
