I don't usually post more than once a day, but something happened today that was just too funny to keep to myself.
So, we're discussing "The Jabberwocky" in Comp II, right? And Carroll used a lot of made-up language in the poem. Words described as "portmanteau" words -- which are basically words made up of other words, used for sound more than anything else. "Slithy" for instance, would consist of "lithe" and "slither."
So, anyway, we're talking about the Jabberwocky itself, right? And what it probably looks like. Most of the students were saying it probably looked like a dragon -- huge, lumbering, maybe with wings. Someone else mentioned Grendel, from Beowulf.
And then I hear, "*muttermutter*Star Wars*muttermutter*"
Me: "...What? Star Wars? Eh?"
Student 1: "Well, we were just saying how 'Jabberwocky' sounds a little bit like something from Star Wars."
Student 2: "Yeah... kinda like... Jabba the Hutt and... a Wookie?"
Me: "....So, what you're saying here is that the Jabberwocky would look like... Jabba the Hutt and Chewbacca's... love child?"
So. Beware the Jabbawookie, my son. ;)
